There is still some work to be done for the Indianapolis Colts despite a very active free agency haul and the recent development of the six draft picks officially being signed, and a dozen undrafted free agents, three of them being wide receivers.
Among those signed was Deion Burks, the Colts’ seventh-round, 254th overall draft pick, who has a lot of potential and upside, but isn't expected to have the impact of a No. 2 or 3 option, at least, not right now. Despite several wide receiver draft signings, Alec Pierce and Josh Downs are the premier options, and the remaining depth, the Colts are still thin at the position.
What they lack is a veteran presence, but more importantly, the players behind Pierce and Downs don't scream the type of impact that can lead to winning big games. Whether Colts’ general manager Chris Ballard intends to further address this is uncertain, but there are still free-agent options the Colts should consider.
3 surprisingly still available veteran WRs the Indianapolis Colts can still sign
Tyreek Hill
If you're a Kansas City Chiefs fan, or perhaps just an NFL fan hoping to see a rekindled spark between Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill come back to life, Hill to the Colts doesn't exactly blow the doors off. If you're the Colts, the feelings should be the opposite, especially considering he's still waiting for a phone call from someone.
Hill had one of the worst years of his career last season, and even though he's older, he's still a lightning rod when the ball is thrown in his direction. The Colts having a downfield threat like Hill would be incredibly beneficial not just for the team, but for Daniel Jones, who’s never had a receiver like him before.
Stefon Diggs
There is reportedly still a chance that Stefon Diggs returns to the New England Patriots, but that speculation could die if indeed they land A.J. Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles next month. That said, Diggs was great for the Patriots, hauling in 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns last season.
He's not a true No. 1 option any longer, but he's still racked up over 1,000 yards each season for the past seven (2024 not included due to injuries limiting him to just eight games). Judging by his one year in New England, Diggs still has a lot left in the tank, and the Colts could use another 1,000-yard-plus receiver next to Pierce.
Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk's situation with the San Francisco 49ers remains one of the strangest in the league. The five-year veteran missed out on last season and remains with the team under contract, but everyone knows he's not playing for them again, and it's expected that the 49ers will release him any time now.
Aiyuk is healthy and just needs a new team; the Colts might be the perfect next stop, and he wouldn't be expensive. The All-Pro wideout should still have a lot left in the tank. He racked up 1,342 yards in 2024, and he's got the veteran experience the Colts need. The only question is whether the Colts would be willing to take the risk on Aiyuk as a No. 2 option.
